Principal Instructor

Major Duties:
(a) To assist the Director in overseeing the daily operations of the Institute regarding programme and academic management, as well as resources management;
(b) To act as Programme Leader of higher diploma, top-up degree and in-service programmes and serve in Programme Board(s), Boards of Examiners and other academic / management committees and work groups as required;
(c) To perform pedagogical / curriculum review and to steer / lead programme development and enhancements according to the latest requirements set by authorities or legislation and amendments to the International Convention on Standards on Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW);
(d) To oversee student administration, support and services;
(e) To prepare financial estimates and staff development plan of teaching and instructing staff;
(f) To develop quality assurance policies and review procedures of the Institute’s Safety Management System and Quality Management System as required by the rules of Det Norske Veritas (DNV) set for maritime training centres;
(g) To assist in formulating strategic directions and implementing related work on networking, vocational assessment, industrial attachments / placements and promotion / publicity programmes; and
(h) To perform teaching duties, update teaching and assessment materials where necessary.
Requirements:
(a) A recognised relevant degree or equivalent;
(b) At least 5 years’ relevant industry experience (including experience on board ships) or teaching experience in recognised maritime training institutions;
(c) Certificate of Competency (Class 1 / Class 2) for Ocean-going Deck Officer or Engineer;
(d) Solid experience in programme design and development, implementation of quality assurance policy; assessment and reporting, and/or student admission and related work;
(e) Experience in leading industry networking activities including workplace attachment, and industrial mentorship schemes, and proven records of professional development;
(f) Strong supervisory and administrative skills with proven leadership ability;
(g) Good administrative, interpersonal, communication and team building skills;
(h) Good presentation skills and a high level of proficiency in both written and spoken English and Chinese, preferably including Putonghua; and
(i) The ability to pass a trade test.
Notes:
(1) Candidates without the required academic qualification stated in the Requirement (a) but possessing (i) Professional Maritime Qualification at Qualifications Framework (QF) Level 5; OR (ii) relevant qualification at Qualifications Framework (QF) Level 4 plus 18 years’ maritime work experience (including on-board experience in Ocean-going or River Trade) or teaching experience in recognised maritime training institutions may also apply.
(2) The appointee will be required to wear working gear provided by the Institute.
(3) The appointee may be required to perform duties outside normal working hours and in designated places as assigned.
